Moving can be a stressful period of time. Things can easily get lost or broken when packing up all of your belongings, loading and unloading them from a moving truck, and unpacking them at your new home.

It’s no secret that using a moving company can take a great deal of stress off your shoulders, especially when you have precious and expensive items to move. In some cases, you may even be charged extra for moving oversized or specialty items.

Some of the most commonly moved items are beds, so you don’t need to worry about the added fees here. You can prepare by having it disassembled and ready to move. If you have a specialty bed such as a Sleep Number, however, there are some extra steps that you need to take.

What Movers Can and Can’t Move

Hiring a moving company to help load and unload your belongings is a great way to ease the stress of moving, but there are certain things that moving companies won’t allow on their moving trucks.

Movers usually have no problem loading up all your furniture and other heavy equipment, but they will never move hazardous materials. So if you’ve got loads of batteries, pool chemicals, or propane tanks for your gas grill, you’ll need to make other arrangements for moving them to your new place.

Can Movers Move a Sleep Number Bed?

Movers have tons of experience moving traditional beds. They move beds all the time, so movers are used to lugging them around. Some people may have trouble trusting a moving company to move their bed, though.

Since the Sleep Number bed is an expensive specialty item, you may be uncomfortable trusting a moving company to handle it for you, but rest assured that as long as you know how to prepare it for moving, you shouldn’t have any problems.

How to Prepare for Moving

Preparing your Sleep Number bed is pretty simple and should only take you 5 to 10 minutes. Begin by fully inflating your Sleep Number mattress. You need to inflate the mattress completely so that it’s easier to handle and move around when moving.

Next, you'll need to open up the mattress and locate the air chambers, corner locks and foam pads. Your bed might have one or two zippers, depending on the model. Look for the zippers at the head of the bed. You'll need to unzip them all the way. Remember to also check for hidden zippers under the bottom edge of the mattress. If you have a duvet-style bed, there might be an extra zipper under the first one. Once you've unzipped everything, set the cover aside. Then remove the air tubes from the mattress, one at a time, and secure the air chamber caps to each connection point to prevent it from rapidly deflating. You can also use a mattress cover or bag to protect the mattress while it's being moved. This keeps the mattress inflated while it's not attached to the Firmness Control System during the moving process.

From there, you’ll need to detach the Firmness Control System, power cables, and air tubes. Pack these in a separate box with packing material for cushion. The Firmness Control System is very delicate and needs to be packed tight enough in a box so that it doesn’t shake or move around in transit.

The Sleep Number bed frame is sturdy but can be twisted or bent while moving. Therefore, it's best to disassemble the Sleep Number base, frame, and headboards. You can pack them separately and save any hardware you'll need in order to reassemble later on.

Sleep Number mattresses are very light when compared to traditional mattresses with box springs, so movers won’t have any trouble moving yours. To give you an idea as to how light Sleep Number mattresses are, a queen-size Sleep Number mattress weighs 32.5 pounds.

Tip: Pack your mattress inside a mattress box or use a mattress cover to protect it from dirt, dust, and potential damage. Also, be careful with the foam pieces inside the mattress. They can get squished or move around if you're not careful. If you're not sure how to move the bed safely, it might be a good idea to hire professional movers. They know how to move tricky things like Sleep Number beds without damaging them.

Is it Easy to Move a Sleep Number Bed?

One small downside to moving a Sleep Number bed is that it requires a few extra steps to safely move it. Unlike traditional box spring beds, the Sleep Number features sensitive electronic components vital to the Sleep Number bed’s functioning.

Once you carefully disassemble and pack the vulnerable parts, a Sleep Number Bed may be even easier to move than a traditional bed, due to its light weight.

Are There Alternatives to Sleep Number?

While Sleep Number beds are excellent, you may still be unsatisfied with its performance. Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives out there for you to choose from. Sleep is important, so you need to find what works best for you.
